On January 21, 2026 in Helsinki, the spirit of community and solidarity took center stage as Philippine Ambassador to Finland Domingo Nolasco attended Filipino Night, an event organized by the Finnish Trade Union for Public and Welfare Sectors (JHL), Finland’s largest union representing workers in the public and welfare sectors.
The gathering celebrated not only Filipino culture, but also the shared values that bind workers and communities across borders. In his remarks, Ambassador Nolasco emphasized the essential role of trade unions in upholding dignity in work, advancing social justice, and protecting the welfare of all workers — regardless of nationality. He noted that these principles reflect Finland’s long-standing commitment to equality, inclusion, and human rights, values that resonate deeply with the Philippines as well.
Ambassador Nolasco paid tribute to the many Filipino workers who have become an integral part of Finland’s public welfare system. He said, “Through their dedication, professionalism, and compassion, Filipinos contribute daily to the well-being of Finnish society and the communities they serve. Beyond their professional contributions, Filipinos also play a meaningful role as cultural bridges, fostering understanding and strengthening ties between the Philippines and Finland.”
The Ambassador also reaffirmed the Philippine government’s commitment to working closely with Finnish authorities to ensure that Filipino workers are protected and empowered. This includes promoting fair labor practices, ensuring access to reliable information, and creating opportunities for skills development and career advancement.
Concluding his remarks, Ambassador Nolasco emphasized the importance of collective action. He stressed that meaningful progress is achieved when trade unions, governments, and communities work together to safeguard workers’ rights and ensure that everyone — regardless of background — is treated with dignity and respect.
Filipino Night served as a reminder that behind every welfare system are workers whose labor, values, and shared humanity continue to build stronger, more inclusive societies.
